Ryan Seacrest - Maroon 5 has been around for a very, very long time, and every album and single they had ever released into the universe has consistently achieved Top 40 success. In April, the band dropped their ubiquitous cut “Sugar,” which dominated the charts and extended their record for the most No. 1 songs by a group on Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay. On Friday morning, frontman Adam Levine called On Air with Ryan Seacrest to reveal his secrets to writing and recording surefire hits.

“I opened myself up to a lot of different new things that I think beforehand I hadn’t been really open to,” he admits. “The thing is, when you’re a songwriter and you want to do this for a very, very long time, you have to learn how to adapt, I guess, and be open to different types of collaborations.” The band will take these hits on an all-new North American tour with Tove Lo, R. City, and Phases in 2016. When asked why they decided to put together a new set of concert dates, Adam says it’s simply what they do.

“We find ourselves in this position where we just continue to have this amazing success,” he explains. “Having our songs on the radio has been the fuel in the tank for the band to perform live. We’ve always considered ourselves to be a live band. I think that’s the cornerstone of who we are.” Also during his phoner, Adam was asked to weigh in on the burgeoning relationship between his The Voice co-judges Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. The singer declined to comment on the romance, but instead, he praised his friendship with Gwen and reminded her of his support.

“They’re my friends,” he says. “Gwen and I have really bonded lately. She’s just the coolest, most wonderful person ever and people don’t really realize that they are humans and they have problems just like everybody else. I love my friends and I support my friends through everything. I’ve been actually really enjoying getting to know Gwen better in the past two months.” General tickets for Maroon 5’s 2016 tour are available on November 14 via LiveNation.com.

R: Adam Levine here on the phone, let me grab Mr Levine. Hello Adam, how are you buddy?
A: Hello Ryan Seacrest.
R: What's happening dude?
A: Oh you know, just living.
R: Living, making hits, working. Hey, you know just a question, I was thinking about you coming on the show, and I kind of have a general question. I mean, you guys (Maroon 5) have been making music, for a very long time, making good music and by the way, making hits. But it seems like, there was a point in the last handful of years, that every single song that you made, went to No. 1. Was there something that happened in life or in the universe that shifted to make that happen?
A: Ah, I sign a deal with the devil, number one.
R: Hahaha, you sold out?
A: Ah yes, sold out. No you know I think maybe that, first of all, a lot of it had to do with timing and luck and all that stuff and I think another thing is that I opened myself up to a lot of different new things that I think beforehand I hadn't been really open to. The thing is, when you’re a songwriter and you want to do this for a very, very long time, you have to learn how to adapt, I guess, and be open to different types of collaborations. You don't have to actually, but that was just kind of where I was at, and I was leading into a lot of very good stuff.
R: Ya, no doubt. And you guys decided to put together a tour, Maroon 5 is going to go out, and we saw the countdown leading up to this announcement. You're going out for a tour, what made you decided to do that now?
A: Well I think that once again, we find ourselves in this position where we just continue to keep having this amazing success. Having our songs on the radio has been the fuel in the tank for the band to perform live. We’ve always considered ourselves to be a live band. I think that’s the cornerstone of who we are. I think a lot of people actually think that we are just a band with our songs on the radio especially musicians and friends, that come to see us live and think wow, they can actually play.
R: laughs
A: And that's our bread and butter. It's true, you never know these days, you can disguise bad playing, bad singing, bad everything but we're good, we're kick ass.
W: That's the thing about you guys, you sound exactly how you do in the radio, live, and that is so amazing.
R: She's so cute.
A: Ya well, thank you very much. That is what we love to do, we love to play.
R: Tickets for Maroon 5's 2016 tour for the general public will go on sale on November 14th, LiveNation.com. I've got a pair of front row sits to go and see them on the 16th in Oakland if you're calling right now. So Gwen was here on Tuesday and I said to her -
A: I love Gwen.
R: Me too bro. And we talked a lot about what she has been going through, what's going on with her world and life. She's just exudes coolness, cuteness and sweetness.
A: She's cool.
R: Anyway, I said to her on Tuesday, "Everyone is talking about you and Blake, what do you say about that?" and she goes, "he's hot isn't he?" and I think that tells us everything and they release the statement the day after, that they were together. How long did you know that there was something brewing there.
A: I will say this. They are my friends. Gwen and I have really bonded lately. She's just the coolest, most wonderful person ever and people don't really realise that they are humans, and they have problems like everybody else. I love my friends and I support my friends through everything. I've been really enjoying getting to know Gwen better over the past few months, love that girl.
R: She's amazing. So you shaved your head and the world went crazy and you reacted that you were surprised that everybody was so insane over the fact that you shaved your head, but I was thinking, would you have taken that risk before you lock down Behati.
A: Dude, whatever. My wife wanted me to do it, she loved it, she can't get enough of it. To pretend to care about how anyone else felt is a waste of my time.
R: Laughs. That's funny. You've got amazing endurance to be doing what you're doing right now and I'm loving it. Hope to see you soon man.
A: Always good to check in with you. Hope everything's well.
R: Talk to soon bye.
A: Bye buddy.
